Prolonged use of the drug omeprazole may lead to nutritional deficiencies

A study warns that the prolonged use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) can impair nutrient absorption. PPIs are a class of drugs including medications such as omeprazole, pantoprazole, and esomeprazole. They are used to treat gastric disorders. Using them inappropriately for periods longer than recommended by physicians can cause nutritional deficiencies such as anemia, and can compromise bone health.
