Four in 10 American high school students report prolonged feelings of sadness or hopelessness, a proxy for depression symptoms, according to a survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2023. That’s up from three in 10 in 2013. Twenty percent said they had seriously considered suicide, up three points from 10 years earlier.
